Free SEO audit tools check a website for technical and on-page problems, such as broken links, crawl errors, slow pages, and missing meta tags, without a paid subscription. Each has limits: a crawl cap, a daily check allowance, or a trial period.
The nine below include permanently free tools (Google Search Console, Ahrefs Free, Screaming Frog), free tiers of paid platforms (Semrush, Seobility, Rank Math), and trials (GTmetrix, Search Atlas). For each one, you'll find what the free version covers, its limits, and what paid plans cost. Pricing and limits were checked on each vendor's site on September 29, 2026.
What to Look for in a Free SEO Audit Tool
Look first at what the free version checks and how much of your site it covers. Most free tools cover one area well, so a combination of two or three usually fills the gaps. Check for:
- Crawl limit: how many pages the free version audits (Screaming Frog stops at 500 URLs; Semrush at 100 pages a month).
- Coverage: technical errors, on-page elements, page speed, backlinks, or a mix.
- Data source: first-party Google data (Search Console) or a third-party crawler.
- Access terms: permanently free, a daily allowance, or a trial that ends.
- Fixes: whether the tool only reports issues or also helps you resolve them.
The table summarizes the free version of each tool.
| Tool | Free version | Main free limit |
|---|---|---|
| Search Atlas | 7-day free trial | Trial ends after 7 days |
| Google Search Console | Free | Performance data kept for 16 months |
| Ahrefs Free | Free for verified sites | 5,000 Site Audit crawl credits per project per month |
| Semrush | Free account | 10 reports per day across all tools; Site Audit up to 100 pages a month |
| GTmetrix | Free trial | 5 tests a month for 3 months |
| Rank Math | Free WordPress plugin | Keeps Google data for 90 days |
| AIOSEO Analyzer | Free Chrome extension | Checks one page at a time |
| Screaming Frog SEO Spider | Free download | 500 URLs per crawl |
| Seobility | Free Basic plan | 5 tool credits a day; 100 pages per crawl |
9 Free SEO Audit Tools Compared
Each entry below covers what the tool audits, what the free version includes, its limits, and paid pricing.
1. Search Atlas

Search Atlas audits a site and then fixes what it finds. Site Auditor and On-Page Audit find the technical and on-page issues, and OTTO SEO deploys the fixes through a single pixel on any CMS. The 7-day free trial gives full platform access, including a 30-minute onboarding session.
Site Auditor crawls up to 20 pages per second and scores site health on a 0 to 1,000 scale, with Core Web Vitals, indexability, and page-by-page health in an Overview, Page Explorer, and Domain Level view. It re-crawls every 7 days by default, and each issue comes with how-to-fix guidance.
The On-Page Audit benchmarks a single URL against the pages ranking for up to 3 target keywords, covering content quality, authority, technical SEO, and page experience, including desktop and mobile PageSpeed Insights scores. SCHOLAR then grades content across 12 dimensions, including factuality, information gain, and readability.
Popular Features
- Site Auditor: Health score on a 0 to 1,000 scale, crawl errors, indexability, Core Web Vitals, and a 7-day automatic re-crawl.
- OTTO SEO: Deploys technical and on-page fixes, such as titles, meta descriptions, schema, and internal links, through one pixel on any CMS. Every change is logged and can be rolled back.
- On-Page Audit: Scores a URL against the ranking competition for up to 3 target keywords.
- Keyword Research: Search volume, keyword difficulty, and CPC across a 5.2 billion+ keyword database.
- Report Builder: Custom reports that combine audit, backlink, and competitor data.
- SCHOLAR: Grades content across 12 dimensions against the pages ranking for the target keyword.

2. Google Search Console

Google Search Console (GSC) is Google's free service for checking how Google crawls, indexes, and ranks your site. It is the only tool on this list that reports first-party Google data, and your site does not need it to appear in search results.
GSC shows which pages Google has indexed and why others were excluded, lets you request indexing for new or updated pages, and reports the queries, impressions, and clicks each page earns. It also emails alerts for indexing errors, security issues, and manual actions.
The Links report shows which sites link to yours and which of your pages they link to.
Popular Features
- Crawl Stats: See how often Googlebot crawls your site and which responses it gets.
- Core Web Vitals: Field data for LCP, INP, and CLS, grouped by URL.
- Indexing Fixes: Identify and resolve indexing issues, and request re-indexing for new or updated content.
- Search Performance Reports: Analyze how often your site appears in search results, which queries drive traffic, and click-through rates.
- Alerts and Notifications: Email alerts for indexing errors, security issues, and manual actions.
- Date comparisons: Compare two date ranges in the Performance report to find pages losing clicks or impressions.
Limitations
- GSC reports problems but rarely explains how to fix them.
- Performance data covers the last 16 months only.
- It covers Google only; Bing has its own Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Google retired the Mobile Usability report in December 2023, so mobile checks now rely on Lighthouse or PageSpeed Insights.
Pricing
- Google Search Console is free.
3. Ahrefs Free (formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools)

Source: Ahrefs

Popular Features
- Site Audit: Crawls your site for 170+ technical and on-page issues, such as broken links, redirect problems, and missing meta tags.
- Site Explorer: Backlinks, referring domains, and organic keywords for your verified sites, up to 1,000 rows at a time.
- Web Analytics: Privacy-focused site analytics, free for up to 1 million events.

Pricing

Popular Features
- Site Audit: Up to 100 pages a month on the free account, with a site health score and prioritized issues.
- Website Authority Checker: Authority Score and a backlink summary for any domain.

5. GTmetrix

GTmetrix tests how fast a page loads and why, using Lighthouse metrics, Web Vitals, and its own GTmetrix Grade, with a waterfall chart of every request. It is a page speed tool rather than a full SEO auditor, so it pairs well with a crawler.
The free version is a trial: 5 tests a month for 3 months, from 2 test regions, with reports kept for 1 week. It requires an account with a verified email address.
Popular Features
- Performance reports: Lighthouse scores, Web Vitals, and a GTmetrix Grade for each test.
- Waterfall chart: Every request the page makes, with its size and timing.
- Monitoring: One monitored URL on the free trial, tested daily, weekly, or monthly.
- CrUX data: Chrome real-user data for the page, with trends on paid plans.
Limitations
- The free version ends after 3 months and allows 5 tests a month.
- Free tests run from 2 regions; paid plans reach up to 28 test locations.
- It measures page speed only, not other SEO issues.

Which Free SEO Audit Tool Should You Use?
The right free SEO audit tool depends on what you need to check. For most sites, a free combination covers the basics:
- Indexing and search performance: Google Search Console.
- A full crawl of a small site: Screaming Frog (up to 500 URLs) or Ahrefs Free (for verified sites).
- Page speed: GTmetrix or Google PageSpeed Insights.
- WordPress sites: Rank Math's SEO Analyzer.
Free tools find issues; the fixes are still manual. If you want the audit and the fixes handled in one place, the Search Atlas 7-day free trial includes Site Auditor and OTTO SEO, which deploys technical and on-page fixes on its own. For a step-by-step process, see our guide to running an SEO site audit.
